Gumball information center What makes gumball
machines so fun? Vending machines have a long history of
use in Europe prior to becoming popular in the US. A post card vendor
was the first commercial vending machine used in London in the first
part of the 1880's.

Thomas Adams Gum Company first introduced the vending machine to America
in 1888 by installing vending machines in New York City's elevator
subway platforms to sell Tutti-Fruiti gum. The Pulver Manufacturing
Company used animated characters on their vending machines in 1897 to
help attract customers. It wasn't until 1907 that the first candy coated
round gumball so familiar today was even introduced.
Vending machines are everywhere. You can’t go to any shopping area without
seeing a few of them here and there selling snacks, sodas, hot drinks, candy,
stamps, and even sandwiches.
